Onder de code naam 69 werd een 4x4 ontwikkeld die in meerdere uitvoeringen werd getest en in 1952 uiteindelijk werd geproduceerd tot 1973 door zowel de GAZ als de UAZ auto fabrieken. In het (communistische) buitenland werd het type GAZ onder diverse namen ook geproduceerd maar de kwaliteit was zo erbarmelijk dat van inzetbaarheid nauwelijks sprake was. De Russische GAZ 69 onderscheidde zich doordat de jeep onder extreme omstandigheden inzetbaar was. De motor olie kon speciaal worden opgewarmd om hevige koude te trotseren en er was een speciaal oliefilter dat door te draaien zichzelf verschoonde. De vierwiel aandrijving was uitzonderlijk sterk en de GAZ kon in diepe sneeuw of dikke modder probleemloos vooruit. De GAZ was ontwikkeld om 5 tot 8 man inclusief chauffeur te kunnen vervoeren of 500 KG uitrusting. Ook kon een aanhanger met kanon worden meegetorst. De maximale snelheid was 90km per uur. Aan het eind van de productieperiode waren 643.285 exemplaren in vele uitvoeringen en modificaties gebouwd en was de als zeer berouwbaar bekende GAZ 69 een vertrouwd gezicht op de ooit communistische wegen. Van de GAZ 69 M (M staat voor een zwaardere motor van 2438 cc) zijn in totaal 10.551 stuks gebouwd.
Deze GAZ 69 M verkeert in nagenoeg nieuwe staat en is van chassis af volledig gerestaureerd A-Z- www.bartholland.com , concours staat.
Under the code name 69, a 4x4 was developed that was tested in several versions and eventually produced from 1952 until 1973 by both the GAZ and UAZ car factories. In (communist) foreign countries, the GAZ type was also produced under various names, but the quality was so poor that it was hardly usable. The Russian GAZ 69 distinguished itself because the jeep could be used under extreme conditions. The engine oil could be specially heated to withstand severe cold, and there was a special oil filter that cleaned itself by turning. The four-wheel drive was exceptionally strong, and the GAZ could move forward smoothly in deep snow or thick mud. The GAZ was designed to transport 5 to 8 men including driver, or 500 kg of equipment. A trailer with a cannon could also be towed. The maximum speed was 90 km per hour. By the end of the production run, 643,285 units had been built in various versions and modifications, and the GAZ 69, known for its reliability, was a familiar sight on the once-communist roads. A total of 10,551 GAZ 69 M (M denoting a larger 2438 cc engine) were built.
