In the mid-1980s, the four-wheel drive theme was booming among car manufacturers: a development that BMW did not want to avoid. Audi set the pace in terms of drivetrain technology at this time, and it quickly became clear: Those who did not have all-wheel drive in their lineup fell behind. BMW countered from the mid-80s with the all-wheel-drive version of the E30: The version of the E30, dubbed "iX," initially appeared in the form of the sedan, followed later by the station wagon. The new all-wheel-drive BMW could be recognized by the plastic trims on the fenders and the sills. The only available engine was the inline six-cylinder with a displacement of 2.5 liters and 170 horsepower. The so-called 325iX was produced between 1985 and 1991.
